Queensland has welcomed Sidestep into its stallion stocks with Exceed and Excel’s only champion two-year-old colt arriving at his new home Telemon Thoroughbreds at Innisplain primed for the serving season.
Prior to his arrival at Telemon Thoroughbreds, Sidestep completed stallion duties in France for the northern hemisphere season.
Back in May, Queensland breeding was buoyed by the news that Sidestep, Australia’s champion two-year-old colt in 2012/13 after winning the Group 2 Pago Pago and finishing second in the Golden Slipper, would stand at Telemon Thoroughbreds for at least the next two seasons.
It was part of an historic arrangement between Godolphin Australia and Telemon Thoroughbreds, one of Queensland’s most successful stud properties.
One of the first to inspect Sidestep on arrival at the property last week was Telemon Thoroughbreds General Manager Joe Heather and he was delighted with what he saw.
“He has arrived in great condition and already showcased what we know him to be – a precocious, athletic, elite and correct type – standing an impressive 16.1 hands,” said Heather.
“The genetic ability is there and the temperament to breed a race horse is also there.”
Heather said that Sidestep, standing at a fee of $7,700 including GST, has already proven to be very popular for Queensland breeders.
“The early support has been better than we expected which has been great.
“He is the highest-rated son of the world’s foremost sire of two-year-old talent, Exceed And Excel, standing in Queensland.
“His dam (Dextrous) is an absolute blue hen mare and strong female families make stallions in my opinion. For any mare to produce three group performed colts (Sidestep, Skilled, Ambidexter) who all now stand at stud is almost unheard of.
“To be able to tap into a family like that is a coup for Queensland breeders, and with his precocious early speed, Sidestep fits the mould for the QTIS system which I believe is the best bonus system for racing in Australia.”
Owner of Telemon Thoroughbreds Dan Fletcher said Sidestep was the best credentialled horse to stand in Queensland for many years.
“Rarely does Queensland get access to a champion two-year-old colt,” said Fletcher.
“He was the first colt home in the Golden Slipper like Hinchinbrook and Charge Forward and we have seen what they have produced at stud.
“There is only one champion two-year-old colt each year and that’s what he is. We believe he fits the bill for what we are aspiring to do with Telemon Thoroughbreds.
“We’ve been very aggressive with his fee, and at $7,700, he’s amazing value at such an emerging stage of his stallion career.”
Breeders supporting Sidestep this season will be guaranteed access to the horse in 2019 without paying an increased fee.
There are also special packages for breeders who send their mare to Sidestep and remain on the property at Telemon Thoroughbreds.
The property, with its renowned elevated and sloped paddocks, has a distinguished history of raising outstanding performers such as Gold Edition, Buffering and Zoustar.
