ROCKHAMPTON filly Paradis Imperial has capped a stellar season with victory in North Queensland’s richest two-year-old race at Cluden Park on Saturday.
Paradis Imperial has more wins than any other two-year-old this season and she showed her class to hold off fast-finishing favourite Dream Kisses in the Townsville RSL Two-Year-Old Classic (1200m).
The Tony McMahon-trained filly had plenty of work to do coming from barrier nine and jockey Nathan Day pushed her forward early to settle fourth on the fence.
Dream Kisses ($3.10 fav) was forced to go to the extreme outside at the turn to find a run, but Paradis Imperial ($4.20) pounced on the field and shot away over the final 200m to score by a three-quarter length, with Golden Guardian ($9) another four lengths back in third.
McMahon said he has long targeted the Townsville Winter Carnival feature race for Paradis Imperial and he felt his star sprinter did exactly what was required against a strong field.
“I think she won with something in hand,” McMahon said.
“She hadn’t raced for three weeks and had to sprint in early stages then Nathan had to relax her before he let her go at the top of straight. She was entitled to stop 200m earlier.
“The horse deserves the full credit and Nathan rode her brilliantly. They’ve built a wonderful combination. We’re just so proud of her.”
Saturday’s victory was Paradis Imperial’s seventh from 12 starts in a brilliant debut campaign and McMahon said he has no plans to spell her just yet.
“She doesn’t get the recognition deserves. She’s won more races than any other two-year-old in Australia,” McMahon said.
“She’s only ever been out of prize money once and that was her last start when she was tragedy beaten and couldn’t get out.
“She’s quite freakish. Everyone keeps asking why don’t you spell her, but she’s trained out of the paddock and she very rarely gallops. She’ll just tell us (when she needs a break).”
Meanwhile, Far North glamour horse Tyzone is tracking perfectly for the time-honoured Cleveland Bay sprint after taking out Saturday’s Open Handicap (1200m) at Cluden Park.
Trainer Roy Chillemi admitted the win brought a tear to his eye as Tyzone ($1.75 fav) toughed it out in a three-way finish on the line fromCASINO Thoughts ($7) and Canny And The Jet ($12).
“He had to bump a few times but he eventually got out … it was a good courageous win,” Chillemi said.
“I thought I had actually got beaten but when the photo came down, I was pleased to see the number one go up.
“For the first time since I have raced him, he has brought a tear to my eye.
“I am not usually a softie but I thought it was a tough win with a bumping dual in the straight and carrying 59.5kgs.”
Tyzone has never missed a place in Townsville, with eight wins from 10 starts, and Chillemi was hopeful his star sprinter can add another feature victory in the Cleveland Bay on July 29.
