Two Queensland bred juveniles burst into the national spotlight on Australia Day when taking out both the Listed Colts and Group 3 Fillies divisions of the Blue Diamond Preview at Sandown. As a result, both were immediately catapulted towards the top of betting for one of the country’s most sought after races, the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes to be held on February 25.
Kicking off the day was the unbeaten Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt The Instructor, who took his record to two-from-two with an impressive on pace win in the Listed Colts division.
Bred by Griff Kruger and offered through their Lyndhurst Stud draft at the 2022 Magic Millions March QTIS Sale, the colt is by Russian Revolution and out of the Denman mare Right Of Way.
“We are thrilled,” Griff Kruger said. “He looks like he will be yet another good horse to come from the QTIS Sale and he couldn’t have been impressive.”
Knocked down to First Light Racing/Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for $230,000 he always looked an early running type according to Kruger.
“He used himself really well and he had that typical frame that we have come to expect from the Russian Revolutions,” Kruger added. “He was light on his feet and appeared racy so I’m not surprised he is up and going this early. It is wonderful to have bred a live chance heading towards the really big juvenile races. ”
The second of the Qld bred 2YO’s to make a splash on Australia Day was the Spirit Of Boom filly, De Sonic Boom, who debuted with a withering last-to-first victory that couldn’t have been more eye-catching.
Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, the striking filly was a $300,000 purchase for James Bester Bloodstock from the draft of Supreme Thoroughbreds at the Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne.
“That was a fantastic performance,” Harry McAlpine from Eureka Stud said immediately after the race. “She had plenty of work to do coming from that far off them but I loved how she was so strong through the line and no doubt she will take good benefit from her first day at the races.”
De Sonic Boom became the 20th Stakes winner for Qld’s Champion stallion Spirit Of Boom as he keeps going from strength to strength.
“It’s a very exciting time for both the farm and the State,” McAlpine added. “Seeing the progeny of the better bred mares hitting the racetracks and the results that are following is something that we very proud of.”
The stellar day for Qld comes just 1 week after another Qld sire, Lyndhurst Stud’s Better Than Ready, sired the winner of the $2m Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Skirt The Law.
All three stakes winning Qld bred youngsters now have the sights set firmly on Australia’s G1 juvenile targets over the coming months.
