In January 2022, Queensland Off-The-Track launched the Acknowledged Retrainers Program. This initiative was developed in direct response to the Martin Inquiry and is part of a suite of programs that support a high-quality first transition for Queensland Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses. The Queensland Off-The-Track Program is funded by the one percent prize money levy which has been implemented to support equine welfare initiatives in Queensland.
The process to become a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer is thorough and all QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers are selected on their ability and experience in retraining Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses of all shapes, sizes, abilities, and temperaments. QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers tailor their retraining and rehoming programs to suit the individual requirements of each horse.
To ensure horses have the best chance of finding the most suitable post-racing homes, QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers objectively assess the suitability and character of each horse, provide them with the necessary education and retraining to assist them with their transition to a second career as a pleasure, therapy or performance horse, and rehome them accordingly, matching the horse to the skill and aspirations of a prospective owner, thereby ensuring each horse is best placed for future success in a new home.
Currently QOTT has 13 Acknowledged Retrainers and within the four months that the program has been operating, 22 horses have been retrained and successfully rehomed, with a further 21 horses currently in training with QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers. With proven ability to responsibly rehome horses at the end of the retraining process, QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers assist prospective buyers in the selection of a retired racehorse that is suitable for their level of experience and intended use.
If you are a current racehorse owner who is wanting to have your horse retrained and rehomed, then a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer may be an option for you. It is expected that any horse consigned to a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer will have had recent farrier work, be in good body condition, physically sound and ready to start work following a suitable let-down period. Any veterinary care (dental, worming and vaccinations), treatment or rehabilitation is expected to be completed by the registered owner/s prior to the consignment of the horse to a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer.
It is also expected that the registered owner/s will cover the cost of transport of the horse to the QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer’s property. For horses retiring from industry who are located in regional areas of Queensland and more than 500km from a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer, the registered owner/s may be eligible to receive a QOTT Travel Subsidy to subsidise the cost of the transport of the horse to a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer.
QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers operate on a tight profit margin, generating income by subsequently selling the horses placed in their care. It is important to ensure that your horse is fit, healthy and sound prior to consigning your horse to a QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer to ensure that QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers remain financially viable and able to service the industry for many years to come.
Any arrangements made regarding the assessment of a Thoroughbred or Standardbred horse, retraining activities, and/or rehoming is the responsibility of the QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer and the relevant parties and QOTT accepts no responsibility.
