The Post-Mortem Pregnancy Loss Project, which has been operating in NSW, VIC and QLD for the past two breeding seasons, will stop accepting submissions of aborted foetuses on Thursday 30th November, 2023.
Funded through the AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Program, the project gave breeders access to free post-mortems on eligible foetuses as part of a pilot to determine the most effective way to establish a national approach to motioning pregnancy loss in Australia's thoroughbred mare population.
The results from the post-mortems have been entered into an anonymous database and analysed for trends and causes, with the aim of reducing pregnancy loss both in the short and long term.
A final report outlining the project's findings will be published by AgriFutures in early 2024.
Thank you to all the farms who have participated in the project and please don't hesitate to contact Cecelia O’Gorman from Thoroughbred Breeders Australia on 0411 696 036 or
