Thoroughbred Breeders Australia is pleased to announce the commencement of a project that for the first time will allow breeders from three states to access free port-mortems on eligible foetuses.
This initiative signals the start of Phase Two of the Post-Mortem of Late Term Pregnancy Loss Project, which started in the Hunter Valley last year.
The major objective of this project is to establish a national approach for submitting and analysing foetal post-mortems, with the intention of building a confidential database that will help identify trends and causes of late term pregnancy loss.
While Phase One of the project was restricted to the Hunter Valley, Phase Two sees the project expand to include South East Queensland and Northern Victoria.
The following vet practices have been engaged to conduct the post-mortems for each region:
Phase Two is set to commence mid-to-late May and the program is calling for expressions of interest from breeders and farms who are keen to participate.

Please note that there is a cap on the number of post-mortems that will be funded as well as eligibility criteria.
This project is funded by the Thoroughbred Research, Development & Extension levy which is overseen by AgriFutures Australia – a government established research and development corporation.
TBA was instrumental in lobbying for the establishment of this levy, which is matched dollar-for-dollar by the federal government and generates close to $1 million annually to spend on research and development projects to benefit the thoroughbred breeding sector.
